Wander Our 2-Acres of Gardens
Refined Tranquility in Seasonal Gardens and Restored Oak Tree Savannah
Guests will enjoy the expansive gardens and burr oak savannah – a quiet two-acre oasis where they can relax and refresh during their stay at our boutique hotel in Okoboji.
The Oakwood Inn is lined with a Honeysuckle border, which opens up as you enter the property. Visible as you approach our hotel, the north garden is anchored by giant white Mop Head Hydrangeas, Antique Bearded Irises and Weigela. It connects to a terraced garden where a variety of perennials, including Hibiscus blooms as large as dinner plates, greet guests as they walk up the stairs.
The driveway approach encircles a beautiful garden where a newly installed fountain rises from the center, surrounded by Boxwoods, purple and pink Endless Summer Hydrangeas, and yellow Daylilies. In the fall, and pink Autumn Joy Sedum and purple Asters brighten the Oakwood Inn entrance.
The burr oak savannah begins on the east side of our Okoboji hotel, providing dappled shade for the Stella De Oro Daylilies, Annabelle Hydrangeas, and many varieties of Hostas. An open courtyard with a grand pavilion in the center borders The Oakwood Inn on the west and is home to several types of conifers and trees, while the savannah provides denser cover, leading into the backyard of our Hotel.
Beautiful perennials surround the two tranquil ponds, which are connected by a babbling brook. Succulents peak out between the rocks bordering the waterfall, while many varieties of Hostas, Hydrangeas, and Daylilies surround the gazebo, garden shed pergola, and burr oak trees. Early summer guests will not want to miss the white Peonies blooming along the south border of the property.
Wildlife abounds on The Oakwood Inn property with regular sightings of white-tailed deer, squirrels, groundhogs, wild turkeys, turtles, and frogs. The neighboring wetland attracts ducks, Canadian geese, snapping turtles, and muskrats, providing never-ending activity easily viewed from the guests’ veranda or patio. Three different types of woodpeckers, two different types of orioles, a variety of finches, hummingbirds, blue jays, grackles, blackbirds, nuthatches and an occasional pair of cardinals provide unending birdwatching delight. With so many to enjoy, it’s easy to see why guests rate us as one of the best weekend getaways in Iowa.
The Den: The Perfect Spot to Play or Relax
A favorite gathering space at The Oakwood Inn is The Den on the garden level. It is a welcoming space for play and relaxation at any time of the day.
Complete with a 9-foot pool table and all the accessories, this room encourages guests to indulge in their competitive side. A game of pool is a great way to socialize with other guests, and even the Innkeepers have been known to join!
Spirited card games are welcome at the card table, a long-standing family tradition of the Innkeepers! The surround sound stereo and movies on the 60-inch flat-screen television provide a nice background to all the lively play. A fireplace adds to the cozy setting and makes for a great space to enjoy a quiet evening during your romantic getaways.
The Den transforms into a quiet space with extra room to work on the beautiful quarter-sawn oak library desk. Big comfortable chairs and a leather lounging couch beckon the guests who enjoy settling in with a good book or a movie.
A complimentary Guest Pantry completes The Den, with coffee, hot tea, sodas, bottled water, and snacks available for guests at any time.
